Compress MP4 Video Online

Compress an MP4 to an exact file size while keeping the container that browsers, phones and editors accept most reliably. The 95 MB preset leaves upload headroom.

MP4 is only a container: phone recordings can still carry 20–100 Mbps video, so a short clip may be hundreds of megabytes even though it already ends in .mp4.

MP4 video file size limits, and what they really mean

Choose the target for the destination. H.264 in MP4 is the compatibility baseline; reducing bitrate or resolution is what reduces the bytes.

Plan / upload methodMaximum file size
Web, CMS or LMS upload100 MB

95 MB leaves room below a common 100 MB cap.

Email or chat attachment20 MB

Use about 19 MB for a 20 MB attachment limit.

Small form upload10 MB

Use about 9.5 MB when a form enforces 10 MB.

What 95 MB actually buys you

Every other page tells you the limit and stops there. The limit is the easy half. Here is the half that decides whether your video is watchable: at a 95 MB target, this is exactly how much bitrate is left for each duration, and the largest resolution that bitrate can carry without falling apart.

Video lengthBitrate left for videoResolution it carriesVerdict
1 min12,888 kbps1440pLooks fine
5 min2,475 kbps720pLooks fine
10 min1,174 kbps480pLooks fine
30 min306 kbps360pVisibly rough

Method: the bitrate column is arithmetic — 95 MB spread across the duration, minus 128 kbps for stereo audio and 2% for container overhead. It is a hard ceiling, not an estimate. The resolution and verdict columns are a recommendation, derived from published H.264 bitrate ladders and pulled down about a third, because re-encoding footage that has already been compressed once survives lower bitrates than encoding a clean master does. Deliberately conservative — we would rather under-promise than tell you a video will look fine when it will not.

95 MB across lengths and resolutions

The left column is what you have to spend at each length; the cells are what each resolution needs. Green means you clear it comfortably, amber means it is watchable but soft, and grey means pick a smaller frame. Reading down a column shows how long a clip can get before that resolution stops being worthwhile on MP4 video.

Source: Computed, not measured — no encoder was run to produce this figure · Method: 95 MB spread over the duration, minus 128 kbps audio and 2% container overhead. Thresholds come from published H.264 bitrate ladders, reduced by about a third for re-encoded source.

What MP4 compression actually changes

The container is not the bitrate

MP4 describes how video, audio and metadata are packaged. It does not guarantee that the streams inside are small. A phone, camera or screen recorder can put a very high bitrate H.264 or H.265 stream into an MP4, so a familiar extension can still produce hundreds of megabytes. Compression reduces the bytes per second, lowers resolution, changes codec settings or combines those choices while keeping the delivery container widely compatible.

Keep H.264 when the recipient is unknown

H.265 and AV1 can preserve more detail at a lower bitrate, but H.264 with AAC audio in MP4 remains the safer handoff for browsers, forms, phones, learning systems and older editors. Use a newer codec only when the destination explicitly supports it. A technically smaller file is not useful if the recipient cannot decode it.

Match the target to duration

A fixed 20 MB budget gives a short clip far more bitrate per second than a long one. If motion blocks, text smears or faces lose detail, trim the clip, lower resolution or raise the target rather than repeatedly compressing the output. Keep the original and always encode again from that source.

How to compress a video for an MP4 video

  1. Drop your video in

MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, WebM and 33 formats in all. Nothing to install — your browser uploads over a one-time link and the file never touches a third party.

  2. The target is already 95 MB

We pre-set it below the hard ceiling on purpose. A target-size encode usually lands within a couple of percent of the number you gave it, but we have measured footage that overshoots by up to a tenth — and landing over a hard limit means the upload fails. Change it if you want a different number.

  3. Download and upload

Encoding runs on our servers, so you can close the tab. The result comes back with no watermark on any plan, in an MP4 that an MP4 video will accept.

MP4 video compression FAQs

Can I make an MP4 smaller without changing its format?

Yes. Keep MP4 as the output and reduce bitrate, resolution or both. H.264 MP4 remains broadly playable.

Why is my MP4 file so large?

MP4 does not set a bitrate. Phones, cameras and screen recorders often save far more data per second than sharing or web playback needs.

Should I use H.264 or H.265 for MP4?

Use H.264 when the file must play everywhere. H.265 can be smaller for camera footage but older browsers and devices may reject it.

Does MP4 compression add a watermark?

No. VidSmaller does not add a watermark to free or paid output.
