WhatsApp has two completely different size limits depending on how you send the file, and the app does not explain which one you are hitting. That is the entire problem, and it has a clean answer.

WhatsApp file size limits, and what they really mean

Send a video from your gallery and it goes in as a video: 16 MB, and WhatsApp re-encodes it on top of that. Send the same file as a document and you get 2 GB with no re-encoding at all — but no inline preview and no autoplay. WhatsApp’s own help pages quote different figures in different places, so 16 MB is the number to target if you want it to work on every client.

What 15 MB actually buys you

Every other page tells you the limit and stops there. The limit is the easy half. Here is the half that decides whether your video is watchable: at a 15 MB target, this is exactly how much bitrate is left for each duration, and the largest resolution that bitrate can carry without falling apart.

Method: the bitrate column is arithmetic — 15 MB spread across the duration, minus 128 kbps for stereo audio and 2% for container overhead. It is a hard ceiling, not an estimate. The resolution and verdict columns are a recommendation, derived from published H.264 bitrate ladders and pulled down about a third, because re-encoding footage that has already been compressed once survives lower bitrates than encoding a clean master does. Deliberately conservative — we would rather under-promise than tell you a video will look fine when it will not.

15 MB across lengths and resolutions

The left column is what you have to spend at each length; the cells are what each resolution needs. Green means you clear it comfortably, amber means it is watchable but soft, grey means pick a smaller frame. Reading down a column tells you how long a clip can get before that resolution stops being worth it on WhatsApp.

What is the WhatsApp video size limit?

16 MB for a video sent in chat from a phone, and 2 GB if you send it as a document instead. WhatsApp Web sits in between at around 64 MB. WhatsApp’s own documentation is genuinely inconsistent on this — some pages describe a connection-dependent 64 to 100 MB ceiling — but 16 MB is accepted by every client everywhere, so that is what we target.

How do I send a long video on WhatsApp without losing quality?

Send it as a document. Tap the attachment icon, choose Document rather than Gallery, and pick your video file. WhatsApp will not touch it, and you get up to 2 GB. The cost is that it shows up as a file rather than a playable thumbnail, so the recipient has to download it before watching.

Why does my video look terrible after sending it on WhatsApp?

Because WhatsApp re-encoded it. Any video sent in chat gets compressed again on WhatsApp’s side, and it is not gentle. The way to fight this is counterintuitive: hand WhatsApp a file that is already close to its target, at 720p rather than 1080p. A clean 720p file at 14 MB survives their encoder far better than a 1080p file they have to crush from 80 MB.

How long can a 16 MB WhatsApp video be?

At 720p, roughly a minute and a half before it starts to soften. At 480p you can push to three or four minutes and still look fine on a phone screen, which is where the video will be watched anyway. The table above gives the exact bitrate at each length.
