Smallest output
VideoCompress
2.49 MiB
51.1% smaller · VMAF 69.55 · no visible watermark
Same file · default settings · measured outputs
We put the same 5.10 MiB, 1080p camera clip through nine online video compressors. There was no universal winner: VideoCompress made the smallest file, CapCut kept the highest measured quality but barely reduced the size, and VidSmaller and FreeConvert delivered the closest no-watermark quality/size balance in this test.
Tested 2026-10-13. Every result below is from an actual downloaded file. Vendor marketing claims are kept separate from our measurements.
Smallest output
2.49 MiB
51.1% smaller · VMAF 69.55 · no visible watermark
No-watermark balance
≈2.98 MiB
≈41.7% smaller · VMAF ≈75.6 · same upstream provider
Highest VMAF
82.23
Only 4.9% smaller · default export changed 1080p to 720p
Rows are ordered by downloaded file size, not by an invented composite score. VMAF is 0–100 and compares the complete output with the source after scaling back to source resolution. A higher value is closer to the source, but watermarks and timeline changes count because they are part of the file a user receives.
| Tool | Output | Change | Resolution | VMAF | Watermark | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| VideoCompress | 2.49 MiB | 51.1% smaller | 1920×1080 | 69.55 | None seen | 51s |
| Kapwing | 2.80 MiB | 45.1% smaller | 1280×720 | 27.95 | Visible | 32s |
| VidSmallerThis site | 2.97 MiB | 41.8% smaller | 1920×1080 | 75.63 | None seen | 32s |
| FreeConvert | 2.98 MiB | 41.6% smaller | 1920×1080 | 75.54 | None seen | 35s |
| Media.io | 3.69 MiB | 27.7% smaller | 1920×1080 | 5.73 | None seen | 17s |
| FlexClip | 3.79 MiB | 25.7% smaller | 1920×1080 | 25.86 | None seen | 42s |
| Clideo | 4.08 MiB | 19.9% smaller | 1920×1080 | 77.75 | Visible | 38s |
| CapCut | 4.85 MiB | 4.9% smaller | 1280×720 | 82.23 | None seen | 31s |
| VEED | 5.96 MiB | 17.0% larger | 1280×720 | 28.75 | Visible | 50s |
“None seen” means no added visible watermark was observed in the downloaded output; it is not a promise about every plan or future version. Wall-clock time includes upload, queueing, processing, and browser polling on one connection, so treat it as a run log rather than a speed benchmark.
VideoCompress was the clear size winner in this run. It cut 51.1% while preserving 1080p and audio, with no visible watermark. Its VMAF was lower than VidSmaller and FreeConvert, so the extra size reduction was not free.
VidSmaller and FreeConvert were effectively tied: around 42% smaller, 1080p retained, no visible watermark, and VMAF around 75.6. VidSmaller uses FreeConvert upstream, so this compares presets and workflow—not independent encoding infrastructure.
CapCut scored highest at 82.23, but saved only 4.9% and exported at 720p. It is the least aggressive successful compression here, not proof that it wins at the same output size.
Clideo and Kapwing added visible watermarks. VEED added a watermark and its default output was 17.0% larger than the source. Media.io, FlexClip, Kapwing, and VEED changed timing or frame count, which is why their full-reference scores need extra context.
Public UI default basic preset: 50% smaller, target 2.55 MB.
Kapwing authenticated free default export: MP4, 1280x720, AUTO compression; added Kapwing watermark and changed timeline to 30fps/295 frames, 9.833s.
Production default Basic Compression: Balanced 60%, H.264, faster preset, MP4.
FreeConvert public UI default settings; page reported Saved 41%.
Media.io authenticated default: 70% output size, original 1920x1080; output changed source 296 frames to 300 frames and extended duration to 10.048s, so full-reference quality includes temporal misalignment.
FlexClip public UI default: 70% high quality, original 1920x1080; output changed 29.97fps/296 frames to 30fps/300 frames, causing temporal misalignment in full-reference quality score.
Clideo public UI default settings; predicted and reported 20% reduction.
CapCut authenticated free default export: MP4, 720p, recommended quality, 30fps; no added watermark.
VEED authenticated free compressor default: MP4 720p, 30fps; added VEED watermark and produced a file larger than the 5.10 MB source.
The source was a 10.01-second Jellyfish camera clip at 1920×1080, 29.97fps, H.264 video with a reproducible 128 kbps stereo AAC test track. It contained difficult water motion and fine particles. The derived file was 5,344,289 bytes (5.10 MiB).
Each service received that exact file and used its public default or recommended free setting. We downloaded the result once, inspected it for an added visible watermark, and measured bytes, streams, dimensions, duration, frames, SSIM, and VMAF locally. We did not repeatedly consume free quotas or bypass login, CAPTCHA, or payment barriers.
Outputs were scaled back to the source resolution and frame rate before VMAF comparison. That makes the score an end-to-end result—including downscaling, watermarks, and temporal drift—not a pure encoder laboratory score. One short camera clip cannot represent screen recordings, animation, long videos, every codec, or future service defaults.

VideoCompress produced the smallest file in this test: 2.49 MiB from a 5.10 MiB source, a 51.1% reduction. Its end-to-end VMAF score was 69.55.
CapCut had the highest VMAF score at 82.23, but it reduced the file by only 4.9% and changed the resolution from 1080p to 720p. Among no-watermark outputs that reduced the file by more than 40%, VidSmaller and FreeConvert were effectively tied at VMAF 75.63 and 75.54.
The scores measure the complete downloaded result, not just encoder efficiency. Watermarks, resolution changes, extra or missing frames, and timing changes all reduce an end-to-end full-reference score. Media.io, FlexClip, Kapwing, and VEED changed the timeline and/or added a watermark, so their scores must be read with those caveats.
No. VidSmaller uses FreeConvert as its upstream processing provider. That row compares VidSmaller's preset and workflow with FreeConvert's public UI default, not two independent encoders.
Yes. Online tools can change their defaults, free-plan restrictions, encoders, and watermarks. This is a dated snapshot from October 13, 2026, using one difficult 10-second camera clip. It is reproducible evidence, not a permanent universal ranking.
The VidSmaller row above came from the real production Basic Compression flow—not a local FFmpeg substitute. Use it free, then judge the downloaded file rather than the marketing copy.
