Instagram will accept a 4 GB file, so file size is almost never why your upload failed. The reason your Reel looks worse than the file on your laptop is that Instagram re-encoded it, and what you hand their encoder decides how much survives.

Instagram file size limits, and what they really mean

Reels, feed video and Stories all accept up to 4 GB. That number is a red herring. Instagram re-encodes every upload to its own ladder, so the useful question is what gives their encoder the least work to do: a clean 1080x1920 H.264 file at 8 to 12 Mbps. Hand them a 3 GB master and their encoder crushes it far harder than it crushes a well-prepared 100 MB file.

What 100 MB actually buys you

Every other page tells you the limit and stops there. The limit is the easy half. Here is the half that decides whether your video is watchable: at a 100 MB target, this is exactly how much bitrate is left for each duration, and the largest resolution that bitrate can carry without falling apart.

Method: the bitrate column is arithmetic — 100 MB spread across the duration, minus 128 kbps for stereo audio and 2% for container overhead. It is a hard ceiling, not an estimate. The resolution and verdict columns are a recommendation, derived from published H.264 bitrate ladders and pulled down about a third, because re-encoding footage that has already been compressed once survives lower bitrates than encoding a clean master does. Deliberately conservative — we would rather under-promise than tell you a video will look fine when it will not.

What is the Instagram video size limit?

4 GB for Reels, feed video and Stories. Duration is the tighter constraint in practice — Reels run to about 3 minutes, and Stories split into 15-second segments automatically. Very few people ever hit 4 GB.

Why does my Reel look blurry after uploading?

Instagram re-encodes everything, and its encoder makes worse decisions when you give it a harder problem. Uploading a huge, high-bitrate master does not preserve quality — it means their encoder has to throw away more, and it does that with no regard for what you cared about. A 1080x1920 H.264 file at around 10 Mbps gives their pipeline almost nothing to do, and that is what survives best.

What resolution should I upload to Instagram?

1080 x 1920, 9:16, at 30fps. Higher does not help: Instagram downscales anything above 1080p wide, so uploading 4K just means your footage gets scaled and re-encoded rather than only re-encoded. Use 60fps only if the content genuinely has fast motion, because doubling the frame rate halves the bitrate available to each frame.

Should I compress before uploading to Instagram?

Yes, and it is one of the few places where compressing improves the final result rather than just shrinking the file. Getting your export to 1080x1920 at 8 to 12 Mbps before uploading means Instagram’s encoder has almost no work left to do, so it makes fewer destructive decisions on your behalf.
